Common/Maori name(s): makomako, Wineberry
Aristotelia is a graceful endemic tree that can be found nationwide especially at forest edges. It has an upright form with single or multiple stems growing up to 10m and spreading up to 4m in ideal conditions. In drier climates Aristotelia serrata can be found in moist forested or shrubby gullies and at lakes or river sides. In mid-late spring panicles of white-pink flowers are bourn and appreciated by bees and many insects. Two to three months after flowering small red/purple fruits will ripen. These fruits are an important source of food for kereru and other frugivorous beings. Early pakeha settlers used to make wine out of the berries hence its name. In order to produce fruit two individuals are needed, one male and one female. In colder inland sites it may lose some or all leaves. It is frost tender when young. This shouldn't be a problem by a large body of water. Elsewhere plant under a larger tree or a shrub in which it will grow through. It prefers moist organic rich soil. Give it plenty of compost when planting and mulch yearly on poor soil. It will tolerate a degree of drought when well established.
