Frequently Asked Questions
Are you open to the public?
No, as a production nursery on a working farm we are not set up for visitors. We choose to forgo the required staff and facilities and pass the savings on to you, the plant buyer. However we understand that many people prefer to see plants before they buy, so we are happy to send pictures etc if necessary. We also plan to host open weekends in season in the future, stock levels permitting.
Where are you exactly?
We are in the Kawarau Gorge halfway between Cromwell and Queenstown. We do not publicise our precise address (eg on Google Maps or with roadside signs) to avoid people visiting without an appointment, for reasons explained in the previous question.
What are PB Bags?
Similar to pots, the PB bag size refers to the grade of the plant. Bigger number = bigger plant. You can find more information on our page here.
Do you have XYZ plant?
If it's not marked as available in our catalogue, the short answer is no. We generally sell bulk plants by pre-order (indent), and can meet any order regardless of quantity or species with enough lead time, so if you are planning a large job, get in touch sooner rather than later.
You can get a quick overview of what we have immediately available by going to our order page.
When is the best time to plant?
The two planting seasons in Central Otago are Spring and Autumn. Both have their advantages, but Spring gives you the most growing time possible before winter, while Autumn gives plants the best chance to get roots established while the soil moisture levels are high, minimising drought stress. If planting in summer, irrigation is recommended.
Is it too late to plant?
We often get this question in late April and May. Species choice is critical. We mostly grow fully hardy plant species, but any species we grow that aren't fully hardy will be described as such in our catalogue.
For a plant to survive winter, the most important thing is hardening. We grow the majority of our species outside so they are already in the process of acclimatising (and larger grades will have survived multiple winters outside already).
You won't see any visible growth until spring, but while the ground is still warm enough they will develop some roots which will give them a bit of a head start when the weather warms up. So it can be better to plant in May or even June instead of waiting until spring.
We are planting our new section, can you help/Can you recommend some plants for our garden?
Yes, get in touch with your plant requirements and we will do our best. We can quote for plant supply based off a plan or plant schedule, or if you do not have a plan, we are happy to offer advice and guidance.
Do you do planting/landscaping jobs?
No, we only grow and supply plants. If you need help planting, landscaping, setting up irrigation, assembling greenhouses, etc we are happy to recommend a company or individual suitable for your job and location.
Do you do Gift Cards/Vouchers?
Yes, we can organise a gift card able to be redeemed as store credit on request. For our overseas customers, we arrange payment by credit card.
Are you sending monthly tradelists?
At this stage we are not, but you can sign up to our mailing list for seasonal updates. You can get a quick overview of what we have immediately available by going to our order page.
Do you do indoor plants?
We do not at this stage.
